This scene is familiar to many college students. Many students do this on a regular basis without a valid excuse.

I believe it kind of is an ethical dilemma in that you are sort of lying if you decide to help out the friend and take it to class for the friend when they're not there. I can see where the student would also feel bad if they were to say no because it's their friend and they wouldn't want to upset them and what not.
